Our History

The library dates back to the founding of the University in 1949. Until 1966 it was part of the network of The Central Library of The Technical University of Budapest. In 1966 it was transformed into an independent library network. Until 1990 it functioned as a network centre for chemistry, the chemical industry and the library of their technical literature. Later when the University became a multi-faculty institution the scope of its collection started its continuous expansion.

Milestones in the Library's History

1950

The university gaining autonomy

The University became independent under the name of Veszprém University of Chemical Engineering. This autonomy allowed the development of specific training and research directions defining the profile of the institution.

1949 - 1960

Moving the library

From 1949 the library was located in Building A, then it moved to the second floor of Building B in 1960. The moving improved the accessibility of the library, providing more space for library users.

1965

Development of computer services

The upgrading of the library's computer services began. This change of paradigm opened up new possibilities for information retrieval, speeding up the browsing process and expanding the databases made accessible.

Setting up a computerised literature monitoring service

A computerised chemical literature surveillance service was launched with help of the Chemical Abstract Condensates (CAC) magnetic tape repository.

Vertically integrated service system

The library's services were already a vertically interdependent system, where the magnetic tape bibliographic monitoring was complemented by document and translation services.

1982

Establishing the first online connection

The first online contact between the University Library of Veszprém and the Lockheed (later Dialog) database service centre in California was established in this year. This connection gave access to 150 databases and 60 million data, significantly increasing research resources.

Renaming of the university

The University has changed its name to the University of Veszprém, and the setting up of a library support for the humanities courses began. The establishment of the new faculties placed new demands on the library, especially in the field of humanities reference works.

1993

Implementation of the ALEPH integrated library system

The library adopted the ALEPH integrated library system, initially complemented by a CD-ROM information system. This new system allowed more advanced and efficient library services.

Participating in the DEDICATE project

The library took part in the international DEDICATE project, which was set up as part of the European Union's library telematics programme. The aim of the project was to support distance learning in the efficient use of information over the network.

1999

The establishment of the University Archive

The University Archive was created to preserve the historical records of the University. The Library also managed and monitored the activities of the University Publishing House, the University Printing House and the University Bookshop.

The impact of higher education integration

After the integration of higher education, the University Library of Veszprém continued its operation as a network. The library of the Georgikon Faculty of Agricultural Sciences in Keszthely and other departmental, dormitory, branch and office libraries joined the Central Library in Veszprém.

2002

Joining the EIS national programme

The University became a 5-faculty university and the library joined the national Electronic Information Services (EIS) programme. The Library Cabinet was established, where students could use catalogues of the national and foreign libraries and the accessible bibliographical databases via the Internet.

New name and new library building

The University of Pannonia was renamed the University of Pannonia and the official name of the library was changed to the University of Pannonia University Library and Archives (PEKL). The moving into the 5-storey, nearly 5000 square metre building, renovated for library purposes in September 2006, was a milestone in the life of the library.

Modern library services

In this contemporary library, beyond the traditional print library services, 150 multimedia public computers with broadband internet access became available to readers, who could access the full text versions of tens of thousands of Hungarian and foreign academic journals online.

Legacies of prominent scientists

Thanks to the bequests of the heirs of renowned scientists and the contribution of leading academics of our university, our library gained significant legacies: a significant part of the personal libraries of Wolfgang Bachofer, Előd Halász, Zsolt Lengyel, Lajos Lőrincze, Antal Nyíri, Ferenc Papp, Sándor Rot, Katalin Szitár are held in the PEKT collection. From the volumes of the personal bequests, a special museum collection could also be created.

Doctoral dissertations database

Since 2008, the library has been building and publishing on its website the database of doctoral dissertations of PhD students who have graduated from the university's doctoral schools.

2009

Joining the Hungarian Repository of Scientific Works-MTMT

In 2009, the University as a founding member joined the Hungarian Repository of Scientific Works (MTMT) initiative, and since then, the tasks related to this project have been carried out by a member of the library staff and, since 2021, by a member of the Scientometrics Workshop.

TÁMOP-3.2.4 project

Supported by the TÁMOP-3.2.4 funding project, our library has been involved in the implementation of local and national service improvements between 2009 and 2011.

2014 - 2016

Professionell associations

Due to its memberships in professional organisations, the library was the organiser of the 2014 annual meeting of the Hungarian Association of Higher Education Archives and co-organiser of the 2016 annual meeting of the Hungarian Association of Librarians.

2018 - 2021

EFOP-3.4.3 projekt

The library has implemented the digital service improvements supported and undertaken under the EFOP-3.4.3 funding project: upgraded its equipment, improved its software, provided English language training for its employees, made lecture notes available online and purchased new foreign language e-books.

2020

University integration and organisational change

In the context of higher education integration, the Library and Archives of the Georgikon Faculty left our institutional organisation in 2020, and the library of the University Centre of Zalaegerszeg joined us. In the same year, the University Printing House ceased its activities.

New name and new structure of the institution

From December 2021, the new name of the institution is the University of Pannonia Library and Knowledge Centre (PEKT). The organisation of the institution comprises four main units: the Library, the Archive, the University of Pannonia Publishing House and the Scientometrics Workshop.

2022

Approving the Organisational and Operational Regulations

In April 2022, the Senate of our University adopted the Organisational and Operational Regulations and the Organogram of PEKT. Accordingly, the University Bookstore ceased its activities.

2022

Joining the Open Science initiative

On 10 May 2022, the University of Pannonia joined the Hungarian Open Science commitment.
